Sylvia's Homeshare Story
Take a look at how Sylvia and Olivia thrive together through the homeshare scheme.
Silvia and Olivia
Silvia is aged 90 and has retinitis which means ultraviolet light has destroyed the retina of her eye, leaving her with limited sight.
Her family got in touch with Homeshare Living in 2022 as they were worried about her living alone.
She was matched with Olivia aged 25 who provides 10 hours of practical support in return for sharing Silvia’s home. Silvia’s eyesight can make it difficult for her to use the computer which is one of the areas Olivia helps her with.
Olivia said:
“This is the longest relationship I’ve had in a long time! The older generation can teach us as much as we can teach them. Silvia’s taught me many things over time. It’s so beneficial for the financial aspect and I think the companion side is very important to me too. In the position I was, I’d gone through separation and moved out of my home with my partner at the time. I moved to London with no home, no job and no friends it was a big step for me in lonely London.”

“Having someone to talk to is very important to me. We watch tv together, discuss films. At first it did seem a bit daunting having somebody come into your home that you don’t know, just the very fact of having someone come and live with you. My family were very pleased it took a lot of pressure and worry from them and I’ve been very pleased, it’s meant a lot to me."

Homeshare Living
Homeshare living connects older homeowners who have a spare room and are looking for companionship with young adult shares who are looking for affordable accommodation and are willing to offer some time, practical help and friendship.
The scheme benefits older people who want to stay in their home but are looking for some company and help around the house and young adults who are moving away from home but still looking for a companionship and a family type environment.
